India Adds Record 25 GW Renewable Capacity in H1 FY26 — Solar Leads the Charge

New Delhi, October 19 ( SolSetu News ) — India’s renewable energy sector has achieved a new milestone, adding a record 25 gigawatts (GW) of capacity in the first half of FY26 (April–September 2025), according to recent data from the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE). Solar power alone accounted for an impressive 21.7 GW — more than 85 percent of the total new installations.
☀️ Solar Takes Center Stage
Driven by falling module prices, improved financing, and streamlined grid connectivity, solar energy remains India’s strongest renewable pillar. States such as Gujarat, Rajasthan, and Tamil Nadu contributed the bulk of new capacity, with Gujarat emerging as the clear leader in rooftop and utility-scale solar additions.
Industry analysts attribute the surge to both policy stability — including the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) Scheme and PM Surya Ghar Yojana — and increased participation from private and corporate buyers under open-access models.
🔋 Wind and Hybrid Systems Also Rise
While solar continues to dominate, wind energy installations grew by nearly 3 GW during the same period, aided by hybrid and offshore pilot projects. The growth of solar-wind hybrid parks in Karnataka and Maharashtra illustrates India’s move toward firm renewable power with higher grid stability.
💰 Record Investments and Global Confidence
Bloomberg NEF reports that clean-energy investments in India crossed $19 billion in H1 2025 alone, making the country one of the top three global destinations for renewable capital flows. International players including Adani Green, ReNew Power, and NTPC Renewables secured multi-GW contracts for upcoming projects.
⚙️ Challenges Ahead
Despite the momentum, sector experts warn of pending issues — delays in transmission infrastructure, land clearances, and financing for distributed solar projects. Analysts say sustaining growth beyond FY26 will require better grid integration and battery storage support to handle increased renewable penetration.
🌍 India’s Global Commitment
India has pledged to achieve 500 GW of renewable energy capacity by 2030 and reach net-zero emissions by 2070. At this pace, the nation is on track to become one of the largest renewable energy markets worldwide, setting an example for emerging economies.
