Europe Accelerates Offshore Wind Expansion with 100 GW Clean Energy Vision
June 22, 2026 – Europe is rapidly expanding its offshore wind energy sector as governments and energy companies invest billions of euros in new projects aimed at improving energy security, reducing carbon emissions, and accelerating the transition to renewable energy.
A coalition of European nations has reaffirmed its commitment to delivering 100 GW of offshore wind power by 2040 through large-scale cross-border projects in the North Sea. The initiative is expected to transform the region into one of the world's largest clean energy hubs while supporting economic growth and job creation.
100 GW Offshore Wind Target by 2040
Ten European countries, including the United Kingdom, Germany, France, Denmark, the Netherlands, Norway, Belgium, Ireland, Iceland, and Luxembourg, have pledged to accelerate offshore wind deployment and strengthen regional energy cooperation.
The North Sea initiative aims to create interconnected offshore wind farms linked by high-voltage subsea transmission networks, delivering enough clean electricity to power millions of homes across Europe.
France Launches Massive 10 GW Offshore Wind Tender
France has launched one of Europe's largest offshore wind tenders, targeting approximately 10 GW of new offshore wind capacity. The program includes both fixed-bottom and floating offshore wind projects and is designed to increase the country's offshore wind capacity from less than 2 GW today to as much as 15 GW by 2035.
The tender supports France's long-term energy strategy and strengthens Europe's domestic renewable energy supply chain through local manufacturing requirements.
Grid Infrastructure Becomes Critical
As offshore wind installations continue to grow, transmission infrastructure is becoming increasingly important. New offshore converter stations, subsea cables, and cross-border interconnections are being developed to efficiently transport renewable electricity from offshore wind farms to major demand centers.
Germany recently awarded contracts for advanced offshore converter systems that will connect future North Sea wind farms to the national grid, supporting large-scale renewable integration.
Economic Benefits and Job Creation
The offshore wind expansion is expected to generate significant economic benefits through manufacturing, engineering, construction, operations, and maintenance activities. Industry estimates suggest that hundreds of thousands of jobs could be supported across the European renewable energy supply chain over the coming decades.
Major investments are also expected in turbine manufacturing, offshore foundations, grid equipment, energy storage, and port infrastructure.
Energy Security Driving Renewable Investments
European governments continue to prioritize renewable energy as a way to reduce dependence on imported fossil fuels and improve long-term energy security. Offshore wind is increasingly viewed as a strategic energy resource capable of providing large-scale clean electricity generation while supporting climate targets.
Industry leaders believe that offshore wind, combined with energy storage and grid modernization, will play a central role in Europe's clean energy transition through 2050.
