What is PM-KUSUM?

PM-KUSUM stands for Pradhan Mantri Kisan Urja Suraksha evam Utthaan Mahabhiyaan . It is a Government of India programme focused on increasing renewable-energy use in agriculture, supporting solar agriculture pumps and solarisation of agricultural electricity systems.

The programme is structured around Component A, Component B and Component C. Component C includes individual pump solarisation and feeder-level solarisation.

Component A – Grid-Connected Solar Power Plants

Component A supports decentralized renewable-energy power plants connected to the electricity grid.

Project Capacity

The official PM-KUSUM framework describes Component A renewable-energy projects generally in the range of 500 kW to 2 MW. Specific state/DISCOM implementation requirements should always be checked before developing a project.

Land and Substation

Component A projects require suitable land and access to an appropriate electricity substation/grid connection. Applicable state and DISCOM procedures determine project selection and connectivity requirements.

Power Purchase Agreement

Electricity generated by eligible projects may be purchased by the concerned DISCOM under the applicable tariff and Power Purchase Agreement arrangements.

Landowners and developers: Eligible landowners may participate through the mechanisms permitted under the scheme and applicable state/DISCOM implementation arrangements. Lease or developer arrangements must be based on appropriate agreements.

Component B – Stand-Alone Solar Agriculture Pumps

Component B supports eligible stand-alone solar agriculture pumps, particularly in areas where grid electricity is not available, subject to applicable state implementation arrangements.

Pump Capacity

The MNRE description of Component B covers stand-alone solar agriculture pumps with capacities up to 7.5 HP under the stated scheme provisions.

Site Assessment

Correct pump selection depends on water source, total dynamic head, irrigation requirement, crop pattern, land area, pipeline length and other technical conditions. A proper site assessment should therefore be carried out before final system selection.

Component C – Solarisation of Grid-Connected Agriculture

Component C focuses on solarisation of existing grid-connected agricultural pumps and agriculture feeders.

Component C – Individual Pump Solarisation (IPS)

Under IPS, eligible existing grid-connected agricultural pumps can be solarised according to applicable PM-KUSUM and state implementation provisions.
