Government Prepares National Rooftop Solar Cybersecurity Program for 2026 to Safeguard Smart Inverters
By SolSetu News Desk
The Indian government is working on a dedicated National Rooftop Solar Cybersecurity Program 2026 that will introduce mandatory digital safety standards for all smart inverters, monitoring systems, and Wi-Fi connected solar devices. Senior officials involved in the framework confirmed to SolSetu that the new program is being prepared in coordination with CERT-In to ensure India’s growing rooftop solar network remains digitally secure.
With millions of smart inverters now connected to home Wi-Fi networks, concerns around remote access, unpatched firmware, and data privacy have prompted the government to create a nationwide cybersecurity structure.
Key Focus Areas of the New Cybersecurity Program
The upcoming program is designed to address multiple layers of digital risk. Officials indicated that the 2026 guidelines would include:
- Mandatory encryption for inverter-to-cloud communication
- Secure onboarding procedures for mobile monitoring apps
- Automatic firmware updates for critical vulnerabilities
- Stronger password compliance during installation
- Two-factor authentication for remote access
- Incident reporting mechanism integrated with CERT-In
- Cyber audit compliance for installers and OEMs
The system will also monitor unusual inverter activity and notify consumers or DISCOMs if suspicious access attempts are detected.
Why Digital Safety Is Becoming Urgent
As India’s rooftop capacity grows, solar inverters are increasingly linked to home automation systems, cloud dashboards, and app-based control panels. These digital touchpoints create vulnerabilities such as:
- Unauthorized shutdown of inverters
- Manipulation of export/import settings
- Exposure of consumer energy data
- Remote tampering with device configurations
Cybersecurity experts warn that protecting renewable energy assets is essential to maintain grid stability and consumer safety.
Pilot Implementation in 2026
The cybersecurity program will first be deployed in states with rapid rooftop adoption:
- Gujarat
- Maharashtra
- Karnataka
- Tamil Nadu
- Delhi
The nationwide rollout is expected before the end of 2026 once pilot audits are completed.
SolSetu will continue to provide updates as the government finalizes the policy and releases detailed compliance requirements.
