India May Introduce Unified Solar Warranty Standardization Policy to Protect Rooftop Consumers
By SolSetu News Desk
The Indian renewable energy sector may soon introduce a unified national policy to standardize warranties for solar rooftop systems. According to government sources, the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) is reviewing proposals to bring all solar manufacturers and EPC companies under a common warranty framework for panels, inverters, and balance-of-system components.
Rooftop Consumers Facing Warranty Confusion
As rooftop solar adoption accelerates under the PM Surya Ghar and state-level subsidy schemes, consumers across several states have reported issues related to unclear warranty terms, mismatched service coverage, and challenges in claiming replacement support.
Many customers receive different warranty periods from different vendors, while others struggle with panel manufacturers and installers shifting responsibility for repairs.
“A uniform policy will eliminate ambiguity. Most complaints today are not about product failure but about who is responsible,” an MNRE official said.
What the New Warranty Policy May Include
Based on early discussions, the standardized policy could mandate:
- A minimum 12-year product warranty for solar modules
- A minimum 25-year performance warranty at 80% capacity
- 10-year inverter warranty across all brands
- Compulsory documentation in a unified digital warranty format
- A national grievance redressal portal for warranty claims
The goal is to ensure nationwide consistency regardless of vendor, state, or subsidy program.
Impact on Installers and Manufacturers
Solar EPC companies say a clear framework will help build customer trust but may increase their administrative responsibilities. Manufacturers may also need to adjust warranty support logistics if MNRE finalizes a nationwide structure.
Analysts believe the standardized warranty system will especially benefit first-time rooftop buyers who currently struggle to understand technical warranty clauses.
Why Warranty Standardization Matters Now
With rooftop solar installations projected to rise sharply through 2026, the government reportedly wants to minimize disputes related to service delivery and component replacement. Standardized warranties are expected to reduce post-installation issues and protect consumer investment.
Expected Announcement Timeline
The draft policy is likely to be released in early 2026 for public consultation. Final guidelines may be implemented in phases following industry feedback.
SolSetu will track developments closely and publish updates as soon as the draft policy is released by MNRE.
