India May Launch National Rooftop Solar Warranty Audit Program in 2026

The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) is considering the launch of a National Rooftop Solar Warranty Audit Program in 2026. The initiative aims to verify warranty compliance across solar modules, inverters, and balance-of-system components installed under subsidy and non-subsidy schemes.

With rooftop installations growing at record pace, the government wants to ensure that consumers receive the full benefits of manufacturer warranties, which are often misunderstood or incorrectly documented.

Increasing Complaints About Warranty Claims

DISCOMs and nodal agencies nationwide have reported rising complaints where consumers struggle to claim warranty support due to incomplete paperwork, vendor disputes, or unclear warranty terms.

A senior MNRE official told SolSetu, “A structured warranty audit will ensure transparency and prevent misuse of low-quality components.”

How the Warranty Audit Program May Work

The program may introduce periodic audits for rooftop solar systems, focusing on:

  • Verification of original warranty certificates
  • Assessment of module and inverter batch numbers
  • Checking installer compliance with manufacturer guidelines
  • Digital registration of warranty documents
  • Central repository for warranty claims and history

The audits may initially target large residential systems (above 5 kW) and commercial rooftop installations.

Benefits for Consumers

Industry experts believe the initiative will help consumers receive rightful warranty replacements, reduce disputes, and improve system reliability.

EPC companies also welcome the move, saying it will help the market shift toward higher-quality components and standardized documentation.

Rollout Expected in Phases

MNRE may roll out the program in early 2026, beginning with states having high rooftop adoption such as Gujarat, Maharashtra, and Rajasthan.

SolSetu will continue reporting as MNRE releases additional details regarding the audit framework.
