India Plans National Rooftop Solar Service Technicians Certification Program for 2026
India Plans National Rooftop Solar Service Technicians Certification Program for 2026
By SolSetu News Desk
The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) is considering a nationwide Rooftop Solar Service Technicians Certification Program starting in 2026, aimed at standardizing installation and maintenance skills across India’s fast-growing rooftop sector.
The move comes after DISCOMs and state agencies reported quality issues in wiring, earthing, inverter installation, and component handling due to untrained or semi-trained technicians working in the field.
Why a Certification Program Is Needed
Rooftop solar adoption has accelerated rapidly in 2025, especially after improved subsidies and rising power tariffs. However, the demand for trained technicians has outpaced supply.
A senior MNRE official told SolSetu: “Certification will improve safety, improve installation quality, and reduce long-term system failures.”
Key Components of the Proposed Program
The national certification may include:
- Mandatory 40-hour training module for installers
- Hands-on practical assessment on rooftop installations
- Safety training for electrical and fire compliance
- Digital ID and registration for certified technicians
- Annual skill-upgradation and refresher courses
The certification will likely apply to both new and existing technicians working with EPCs, distributors, and freelance service providers.
Impact on Installers and Consumers
Solar EPC companies believe the move will improve installation consistency and reduce customer complaints related to wiring faults and inverter failures.
Consumers will benefit from improved safety, better workmanship, and longer system lifespan.
Expected Rollout Timeline
The program is expected to launch in phases:
- Phase 1 (mid-2026): Maharashtra, Gujarat, Rajasthan, Karnataka
- Phase 2 (late-2026): Delhi, Haryana, Tamil Nadu, Telangana
- Phase 3 (2027): Nationwide adoption
Training centers may operate through government ITIs, private solar academies, and certified training partners.
SolSetu will continue covering this development and share updates once MNRE releases the official training framework.
