India May Introduce Solar Equipment Recall Framework to Address Faulty Rooftop Components

The Indian government is evaluating the creation of a dedicated Solar Equipment Recall Framework to address recurring issues with faulty solar modules, inverters, surge protectors, and wiring components used in rooftop solar installations. The initiative is designed to prevent safety hazards and improve long-term system reliability.

Rising Complaints Trigger Policy Push

As rooftop solar adoption grows across the country, several DISCOMs and state agencies have reported an increase in complaints related to inverter failures, hot-spot formation in modules, and defective connectors that pose fire risks.

“A structured recall mechanism will ensure that defective batches are quickly isolated and replaced,” a senior MNRE official told SolSetu.

What the Recall Framework May Include

According to early discussions, the recall system may introduce:

  • Mandatory reporting of equipment failures by EPC installers
  • A national recall database for faulty solar components
  • Manufacturer responsibility for free replacement of defective batches
  • Integration with ALMM and safety compliance checks
  • Consumer notification alerts for affected components

The system is expected to function similar to automobile or electronics recall mechanisms, ensuring accountability across the value chain.

Industry Reaction

Large manufacturers have welcomed the move, stating that it will help maintain trust and set quality benchmarks for the sector.

However, smaller component producers may need support to comply with tracking, reporting, and replacement obligations.

Expected Implementation

The framework may be launched in phases beginning early 2026, with initial focus on high-risk components such as DC connectors and inverters.

SolSetu will continue tracking the policy development and publish updates as soon as MNRE releases the draft guidelines.
