India Plans Faster Rooftop Solar Grid-Approval Windows for High-Demand States
By SolSetu News Desk
The Indian government is evaluating a proposal to introduce faster rooftop solar grid-approval windows for states experiencing high demand under the PM Surya Ghar and state-level subsidy schemes. The plan aims to streamline grid-integration procedures and reduce waiting times for rooftop solar consumers.
High-Demand States Struggling With Approval Backlogs
States such as Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Kerala, Gujarat, and Karnataka have reported a significant surge in rooftop solar applications in 2025. Many DISCOMs in these regions are taking 20–45 days for grid approvals, delaying system commissioning and subsidy processing.
A senior official familiar with the developments told SolSetu that the government is considering special approval windows for densely populated urban clusters with higher demand.
New Approval Windows Likely to Be Introduced
The proposal under review may include:
- Dedicated morning and evening slots for rooftop solar approvals
- Fast-lane processing for verified installers
- AI-assisted document checks for grid readiness
- Real-time progress tracking for consumers
The system is expected to reduce congestion in DISCOM offices and speed up the technical feasibility approval process.
Impact on Consumers and Installation Timelines
Industry analysts say the move could cut rooftop installation timelines by 30–40% in major metro regions. Faster approvals will also help consumers receive subsidy payments sooner.
Solar EPC companies believe such reforms are essential as India moves toward its ambitious rooftop solar expansion goals for 2026.
Implementation Expected in Phases
The faster approval system may first roll out in Mumbai, Pune, Jaipur, Ahmedabad, and Bengaluru, followed by medium-demand cities.
The Ministry of Power and MNRE are expected to release an official notification later this year.
SolSetu will continue tracking these developments and publish updates as soon as more details are announced.
