DISCOMs to Roll Out Digital Net-Metering Verification Upgrades Across India in 2026

India’s electricity distribution companies (DISCOMs) are preparing to roll out upgraded digital net-metering verification systems across the country starting in 2026. The initiative aims to improve accuracy, eliminate manual delays, and increase transparency for rooftop solar consumers.

The move comes as applications under the PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana continue to rise, putting pressure on DISCOMs to improve processing speed and reduce approval backlogs.

AI-Based Verification Coming Soon

According to early technical documents reviewed by industry analysts, the upcoming system may include:

  • AI-driven verification of installation photographs
  • Automatic validation of inverter serial numbers
  • Digital cross-checking of meter readings and load approvals
  • GPS-based installation location confirmation
  • Real-time integration with state solar portals

These upgrades are expected to drastically reduce approval times for residential and commercial rooftop installations.

Why the Upgrade Was Needed

With rooftop adoption accelerating across states, DISCOMs have faced operational challenges, especially in verifying net-metering requests manually.

A senior DISCOM official told SolSetu, “Digital verification will remove human errors and allow us to approve net-metering requests much faster.”

States Leading the Rollout

The first phase of the upgrade may launch in:

  • Maharashtra
  • Rajasthan
  • Gujarat
  • Karnataka
  • Telangana

These states currently receive the highest volume of rooftop solar applications in India.

Impact on Installers and Consumers

Solar EPC companies expect faster commissioning timelines, fewer rejections, and more predictable project schedules once the new digital system is operational.

Consumers will benefit from quicker activation of net-metering, leading to earlier savings on their monthly electricity bills.

Rollout Expected in 2026

The digital net-metering verification framework is expected to be finalized by Q1 2026 with pilot testing to begin before the next financial year.

SolSetu will continue covering this development and publish updates as formal notifications are released.
