Indian DISCOMs to Adopt AI-Based Automated Verification for Rooftop Solar Net-Metering in 2026
By SolSetu News Desk
Several power distribution companies (DISCOMs) across India are preparing to introduce AI-based automated verification for rooftop solar net-metering applications starting mid-2026. The move is expected to significantly reduce approval delays and eliminate manual errors that frequently slow down rooftop solar installations under state and national subsidy programs.
Increasing Volume of Applications Driving the Shift
The rapid growth of rooftop solar—accelerated by the PM Surya Ghar scheme—has resulted in some DISCOMs receiving more than triple their usual monthly application load. Many utilities have reported backlogs due to the requirement of physical inspections and multi-level document checking.
A senior official from a Western-region DISCOM told SolSetu, “Our teams spend hours verifying panel layouts, wiring photos, and technical parameters. AI-based verification will allow us to approve straightforward cases within minutes.”
How the AI Verification System Will Work
The new automated system will check uploaded rooftop installation documents, images, and technical specifications using computer vision and predictive algorithms. Key parameters include:
- Correct module and inverter configuration
- Proper installation of DC isolators
- Mounting structure stability verification
- Wiring safety and grounding checks
- Geo-tag validation and tamper detection
Only cases that show errors or risks will be flagged for manual inspection.
Expected Benefits for Consumers and Installers
DISCOMs estimate that approval times for standard residential installations may drop from 15–30 days to less than 48 hours. Installers also expect faster payment release under subsidy-linked programs.
Rooftop EPC companies believe this will increase consumer confidence and reduce installation-to-commissioning delays.
Pilot Projects Already Underway
The AI verification model is currently being tested in parts of Gujarat, Delhi, and Telangana. Early results show a 65% reduction in document mismatch cases and improved consistency in approval decisions.
Industry experts say the system could serve as the foundation for a unified national rooftop solar approval platform in the future.
National Rollout Expected by Late 2026
MNRE is expected to hold stakeholder consultations in early 2026 before recommending or approving the AI-based verification framework for nationwide adoption.
SolSetu will publish further updates as DISCOMs finalize deployment plans across states.
