India May Launch Digital Solar Installation ID System in 2026 to Track Rooftop Projects Nationwide

India is evaluating a new national framework called the Digital Solar Installation ID System (DSI-2026) — a unique ID to be assigned to every rooftop solar installation in the country. Sources told SolSetu that the proposal is being reviewed by MNRE to improve transparency, reduce fraud, and streamline approval processes.

The system would create a nationwide digital record of all rooftop installations, including information about system size, location, installer details, component brands, and commissioning dates.

Why a Digital Installation ID Is Being Considered

Currently, rooftop solar approvals are scattered across state portals, DISCOM systems, and installer submissions. This makes tracking difficult. A unified ID could help solve issues related to:

  • Duplicate applications
  • Non-BIS module installations
  • Unverified installation claims
  • Delayed subsidy disbursements
  • Incomplete system documentation

A senior MNRE official noted, “A Digital Solar ID will eliminate confusion and ensure every rooftop system in India is traceable from installation to maintenance.”

What the DSI-2026 May Include

The unique digital ID may store:

  • GPS-mapped installation location
  • Consumer details (masked for privacy)
  • Installer company name & rating
  • Solar panel & inverter serial numbers
  • System capacity & array layout
  • Commissioning date & verification status
  • Net-metering approval history

The ID may be scannable through a QR code placed on the inverter or meter panel.

Benefits for Consumers & Installers

The digital ID could simplify several processes, including:

  • Warranty verification
  • Installer accountability tracking
  • Quick approval checks by DISCOMs
  • Instant confirmation of BIS-certified components
  • Access to maintenance and service history

It may also help prevent fraudulent installations under government schemes.

Expected Rollout Timeline

DSI-2026 pilot testing may begin in early 2026 in:

  • Maharashtra
  • Gujarat
  • Karnataka
  • Rajasthan
  • Delhi

Nationwide adoption may follow by the end of 2026.

SolSetu will continue monitoring this development and share updates once official guidelines are released.
