Rajasthan Overhauls Power Grid to Support Rapid Expansion of Distributed Solar

Rajasthan is undertaking a major power grid upgrade to manage the accelerating growth of rooftop and feeder-level solar installations across the state. The move reflects the increasing impact of distributed renewable energy on electricity networks and the need for advanced grid management systems to maintain reliability and efficiency.
With solar adoption rising sharply in residential, commercial, and agricultural segments, distribution utilities in Rajasthan are facing new operational challenges, including voltage fluctuations, reverse power flow, and feeder congestion. To address these issues, the state is planning the deployment of Distributed Energy Resource Management Systems (DERMS) alongside battery energy storage solutions.
Distributed Solar Growth Drives Grid Modernisation
Rajasthan has emerged as one of India’s leading solar states, benefiting from high solar irradiance and strong policy support. In recent years, rooftop solar and decentralised feeder-level projects have expanded rapidly, particularly in urban areas and agricultural feeders.
While this growth has reduced dependence on conventional power sources and lowered electricity costs for consumers, it has also placed strain on existing grid infrastructure that was not originally designed for two-way power flows.
DERMS and Battery Storage at the Core of the Strategy
The planned introduction of DERMS will enable utilities to monitor, control, and optimise distributed energy resources in real time. These digital platforms allow grid operators to balance supply and demand dynamically, improve visibility at the feeder level, and respond quickly to fluctuations caused by variable solar generation.
Battery energy storage systems are expected to play a complementary role by absorbing excess solar power during peak generation hours and discharging it during periods of high demand. This integration will help stabilise voltage levels, reduce curtailment, and enhance overall grid resilience.
Preparing for a High-Renewables Future
Energy experts note that Rajasthan’s grid upgrade is a critical step toward preparing the state for a future with significantly higher shares of renewable energy. As distributed solar continues to scale, investments in digital infrastructure, automation, and storage will be essential to ensure reliable power delivery.
The initiative also aligns with India’s broader clean energy goals, which emphasise decentralised generation, grid flexibility, and the integration of renewable energy at all voltage levels.
By modernising its distribution network, Rajasthan is positioning itself as a model for managing high levels of distributed solar while maintaining grid stability and supporting long-term renewable energy growth.
