India May Introduce Solar Panel Serial Number Verification System in 2026 to Prevent Fake Module Installations
By SolSetu News Desk
India is evaluating a proposal to launch a nationwide Solar Panel Serial Number Verification System (SNV-2026) to curb the installation of counterfeit, low-grade, or non-certified solar modules. According to internal discussions reviewed by SolSetu, MNRE and BIS may soon mandate digital verification of each solar panel before rooftop installation.
The move comes as rooftop demand accelerates and reports of non-BIS panels entering the market raise quality and safety concerns.
Why Serial Number Verification Is Being Considered
In the last two years, industry audits found a rise in:
- Non-certified panels sold as BIS-approved
- Mismatched model numbers
- Panels with erased or duplicate serial numbers
- Grey-market imports without performance warranties
Experts say a national verification system could significantly improve consumer safety and ensure long-term performance.
How SNV-2026 May Work
Early drafts indicate the system may include:
- QR-code scanning of each solar module
- Instant validation against a national MNRE database
- Manufacturer authenticity check
- Warranty registration linked to serial number
- Real-time tracking of module installation location
- Alerts for duplicate or invalid serial numbers
Installers would be required to upload verification proof before commissioning the system.
Benefits for Consumers
The verification system would help homeowners ensure that:
- They receive genuine BIS-certified solar modules
- Warranty protection is valid and traceable
- No duplicate or counterfeit modules are installed
- Long-term generation performance is guaranteed
The system may also help DISCOMs verify installations more accurately for subsidy approvals.
Pilot Launch Expected in 2026
SNV-2026 may begin pilot deployment in:
- Gujarat
- Maharashtra
- Rajasthan
- Delhi
- Tamil Nadu
National rollout could follow in late 2026 based on pilot performance.
SolSetu will continue monitoring policy developments and share updates as MNRE finalizes the verification framework.
